Clayton left Terri Davis with the certainty she hadnât shot the judge, but he wasnât quite so sure she and the judge only talked about his daughter. He was climbing in his SUV when his cell phone rang. Jen.
âNothingâs wrong, is it?â he asked.
âIâm checking on you since you havenât made your nightly call,â his sister replied.
Clayton scraped his hand over his jaw, the stubble prickling his fingers. He couldnât believe heâd forgotten to call. Yes, he could. Itâd been a crazy day. âWorking a case. Howâs Ava?â
âSheâs fine. Missing you.â
âIâm sorry. Mind if I stop by a minute?â
She hesitated. âIâd rather you didnât.â
Something in her voice bothered him. âWhy not?â
âI donât want you to wake her up.â
âI wonât. I just want to see her.â When Jen reluctantly agreed, he pointed his SUV toward his sisterâs house. She let him in with a finger to her lips and then glanced over her shoulder.
âKeep your voice down,â Jen said, her voice not much more than a shaky whisper.
A tense undercurrent filled the room. âYou okay?â
âWhy wouldnât I be?â
âI donât know. You tell me. Do you need money?â
She shook her head and shooed him down the hall. âAnd rememberâdonât wake her up,â she mouthed.
âYes, maâam.â Now she had him whispering. Clayton tiptoed to his nieceâs bedroom. Sheâd kicked her blanket off and lay curled in a ball. It was all he could do to keep from stroking her hair as he tucked the blanket around her.
His gaze traveled to the red birthmark on her cheek. The pediatrician had said it would fade before she started school, but it hadnât. Clayton had researched and discovered some never faded. If Jenâs worthless husband hadnât quit his job, it couldâve been fixed a year ago, before she started school. Jakeâs insurance company had been one of the few that didnât consider a port wine stain on the face cosmetic surgery, especially in a child.
He bent over and lightly kissed her head, then eased out of the bedroom. Jen sat on the sofa, her hands working furiously with her knitting needles. She looked up when he returned to the great room, and for a second, she seemed to hold her breath.
âHow are you fixed for money?â
âIâve already told you that weâre fine.â She glanced toward the hallway again, then finished the row and laid her work aside. âThanks for coming by.â
âWhy are you in such a hurry to get rid of me?â
She shifted her gaze to the floor. âClayton, Iâm beat. Itâs been a long day, and every other customer I checked out found something to complain about. Either the price of lettuce was too high or the meat had too much fat . . . like I could do something about it.â
Jen was downright jittery. Something wasnât right. He scanned the room, and his shoulders tightened. Someone had draped a black leather jacket over the back of a kitchen chair. Not just someone. âWhereâs Jake?â he asked through clenched teeth.
Silence filled the room until a man stepped from the kitchen.
